Council Wide Make a Difference Day-
Saturday, October 22, 2005

The Greater Western Reserve area is a wonderful place to discover. From the rolling hills of the Ashtabula area to the whispering pines tucked away in the Mahoning valley.

The deep gorges of Geauga and the sandy beaches of the Lake Erie shores.

A common thread to these beautiful places is our streams and rivers. The Mahoning, Ashtabula, Grand, Chagrin, Cuyahoga and many other rivers offer waters that provide a balance of nature and wildlife. We use these waters for boating, swimming, fishing and a whole host of other activities.

Floods, erosion and human carelessness all do their part in polluting these waters. In order to maintain these streams and rivers in a clean ecosystem, we must sometimes step in and help mother nature.

This October 22, National Make a Difference Day, will be the GWRC Clean Rivers Day.

This day long event will provide units to plan and participate in the cleaning of their local streams and rivers.

The Clean Rivers Day may include sending river bank crews to clear debris from floods, retrieve old tires and collect trash.

At the end of the day, units will e mail their collection weight results to Kent Marks, at kmhi@nls.net, where the total tonnage will be recorded.

Units are asked to contact their local media outlets at least a month in advance so these outlets can schedule reporters to cover the event.

Make a Difference Day-

EVENT Information

  1. Submit a local tour permit for Saturday, October 22
  2. E mail your units proposed work schedule, along with start times and completion time. Include the stream or river your unit has selected and what section that your unit will be cleaning. This schedule should be e mailed at least two weeks prior to the event so the media may be notified.
  3. On the day of the event, secure a photographer from your unit and using a digital camera, take pictures and forward the pictures to kmhi@nls.net. These pictures may be used for media and promotional information.
  4. Secure a local business (with dumpsters) that is willing to collect your river debris. If at all possible, weigh the debris. If not, make an educated guess. A rule of thumb is that a leaf garbage bag filled with household trash weighs about 30 pounds. Tires without rims weigh about 50 pounds each. Etc.
  5. Be sure to plan for your lunch, either having each participant bring their own, or set up a central lunch area with food provided. Again, ask local businesses for help with lunch costs.
  6. At the end of the day, e mail your debris weight to kmhi@nls.net. Look for district and council results to be posted on the GWRC website soon afterward.
  7. Log on and record your units efforts on the Good Turn for America website.
  8. Fill out an application on behalf of your unit and send it to the Make a Difference Foundation. Your unit may win an award! www.usaweekend.com/diffday
