Activities and Civic Service

The Activities and Civic Service Committee meets once every two months.

The committee meets at Mary Yoders Amish Restaurant, located on Rt. 608, Middlefield, Ohio.

Meet in the conference area from 6:45 – 8:00 pm. Dinner is available for purchase.

GWRC Activities and Civic Service Committee Report

The committee met on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at Mary Yoders Restaurant

Those in attendance-

  1. Jack Acri discussed Silver Beaver nomination information was sent out via Doubleknot email
  2. Council Awards Banquet location was discussed. Brian Johnson reported that he found out the menu, dinner costs, facilities costs and set up fees for the Geneva State Park lodge. Brian to look into an adjusted rate for our awards dinner. Dinner scheduled for May 28, 2008
  3. Training Expo8- Noted that this council event will take place on April 12. Craig Brown is chair of this event and is looking for a few more instructors. (April)
  4. Scouting for Food- March 1 and March 8. Door hangers to download. Each unit to do their own food drive.
  5. The committee discussed the next Scouting EXPO. It was agreed that if another EXPO is held, it should coincide with the 100th anniversary of the BSA. Tentative dates for this event is April or May 2010. Location for the EXPO is planned for the Canfield Fairgrounds. Jack Acri is looking into the availability of dates and appropriate fees.
  6. Council wide ‘STIG Championship Saturday’. Set for April 5, 2008. Corn Toss Tournament. A Saturday event with everyone having the opportunity to participate. Two person teams with adult division, Boy Scout division, Cub Scout division and an open division. Teams are required to build their boards and bags, with prizes going to game champs and best board designers. Mountain Bike Biathlon including trail for cub scouts. The Second Annual Dutch Oven Cookoff.

The next scheduled committee meeting is set for Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Mary Yoders Restaurant, 6:45 – 8:00 pm.

  1. Jack Acri discussed Silver Beaver nomination issue of not enough information on the requirements and procedure for the application. Jack agreed to write up an information article for distribution via the Doubleknot process. This article will be sent out as time sensitive with distribution date before November 1. (December)
  2. Council Awards Banquet location was discussed. Scott noted that last years ceremony was held in the southern region of the council. The committee agreed to look into other locations. Brian Johnson is checking on price and availability of the Geneva State Park facility. (May)

  5. Merit Badge Series. Concerns over scouts not getting enough opportunity for certain eagle merit badges has brought on the idea of setting various merit badge class to be available for scouts to attend. Merit badges of concern include First Aid, Emergency Preparedness and Environmental Science. Use of our camps during the winter months as training locations is viable. We need to contact the advancement committee for looking into qualified counselors for this type of event. Kent Marks is looking into this idea.
